Speech & Essay Contest

Limited to Englist students enrolled in 2023 spring courses

Speech contest

  • Contestants will choose a question to answer from a set of three prompts
  • The written speech is due before the event (contestants will be informed of due dates)
  • There will be several rounds of competition
  • The speech does not have to be memorized
  • Contestants are judged on pronunciation, delivery, engagement, and content
  • A workshop with an Englist teacher will be available

Divisions (*Only 7 contestants will qualify for the final round in each division.)

Junior High (Grades 7-9)

Junior high speeches must be 4-5 min. long

High School (Grades 10-12)

High school speeches must be 5-6 min. long

Essay Contest

  • Contestants will choose a question to answer from a list of prompts
  • There will be several rounds of competition, with the first judged by Englist teachers and the final round judged by an expert panel of judges
  • Contestants are judged on mechanics, structure, clarity, reasoning, and engagement
  • All essay finalists must be prepared to answer questions about their essays at the event

Opinion essay about a controversial topic (500-word minimum)

High School (Grades 10-12)

Research paper about a social issue (1000-word minimum)

1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

1st Place

1st place winner in each division gets NT$3,000 in cash or NT$5,000 off tuition next semester

2nd Place

2nd place winner in each division gets a NT$1,000 bookstore gift card
