Reading/Writing Bootcamp

Grades 1-6 (Fundamentals 1-3)

Through enriching reading material we aim to engage young minds and instill in them a passion for learning. Through immersive-English instruction, our classes help beginner learners develop strong pronunciation, listening, and speaking skills.

What is guided reading and sentence building?

Our Fundamentals program develops the foundation for strong academic writing skills. There are two main areas of focus at the elementary level—guided reading and sentence building.

  • Guided reading is done as a group where students practice reading silently, out loud, and by listening to the teacher and other students. As a class, they discuss texts to develop and enhance comprehension and vocabulary.

  • Sentence building is taught through writing practice, revision, and grammar practice. Students are asked to employ grammar skills organically through their writing. By rewriting sentences edited by their teacher, students are able to target their own individual mistakes and problems unique to their writing experience.

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, a mad scientist named Dr. Stinky McNasty has created a Mighty Robot who is as gentle as he is powerful. Dr. Stinky plans to make the Robot destroy Squeakyville, but there’s one little thing in his way: Ricky Ricotta! When Ricky rescues the Robot, an unlikely friendship begins. And Ricky discovers that a little mouse can be a BIG hero — with some help from his new best friend!

Today is Ricky’s birthday, and it’s off to a great start! After peanut-butter pancakes and presents, Ricky’s parents are taking him and his Mighty Robot to see dinosaurs at the museum. And they have a surprise for Ricky: His cousin, Lucy, is coming with them! Ricky thinks Lucy is a real pest. Suddenly, things aren’t looking so sunny anymore.

At the museum, there is another surprise in store. General Jackrabbit, an evil genius from the planet Jupiter, is jumping for joy! He has just created three Jurassic Jackrabbits to help him take over Earth. Can Ricky and his Robot beat these big, bad bunnies? Or will this end up the WORST birthday ever?

Session 4 (August 11-22)

Ricky’s family is headed to Cousin Lucy’s house for lunch — how boring! Ricky and his Robot are hoping to have a little fun with Lucy’s pet Jurassic Jackrabbits, but when they get there, Lucy makes them play princess with her instead! What could be worse?

An invasion of Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn, that’s what! Smelly Sergeant Stinkbug has arrived on Earth with a plan to kidnap its ruler, and Princess Lucy fits the bill. Now it’s up to Ricky and his Mighty Robot to plug their noses and send those stinkers back into space!

Toto 4: The Ninja Cat and the Mystery Jewel Thief

Fundamentals 3

Session 1 (July 1-11)

The Terrible Two

Session 2 (July 14-25)

The Lemonade War

Evan Treski is people-smart. He is good at talking with people, even grownups. His younger sister, Jessie, on the other hand, is math-smart-but not especially good at understanding people. She knows that feelings are her weakest subject. So when their lemonade war begins, there really is no telling who will win-and even more important, if their fight will ever end.

Here is a clever blend of humour and math fun. As it captures the one-of-a-kind bond between brother and sister, this poignant novel subtly explores how arguments can escalate beyond anyone’s intent.

Session 3 (July 28 - August 8)

The Beast and the Bethany

Lemony Snicket meets Roald Dahl in this “wickedly funny” (James Ponti, New York Times bestselling author), deliciously macabre, and highly illustrated tale of a hungry beast, a vain immortal man, and a not-so-charming little girl who doesn’t know she’s about to be eaten. Beauty comes at a price. And no one knows that better than Ebenezer Tweezer, who has stayed beautiful for 511 years.

How, you may wonder? Ebenezer simply has to feed the beast in the attic of his mansion. In return for meals of performing monkeys, statues of Winston Churchill, and the occasional cactus, Ebenezer gets potions that keep him young and beautiful, as well as other presents. But the beast grows ever greedier with each meal, and one day he announces that he’d like to eat a nice, juicy child next. Ebenezer has never done anything quite this terrible to hold onto his wonderful life.

Session 4 (August 11-22)

Week 7: Animals – Past, Present, and Future

From towering beasts of the past to the fascinating creatures of today—and even the animals of tomorrow—this week is all about the wild world of animals! As the week progresses, we’ll shift our focus to modern wildlife, including endangered and exotic animals, discovering the challenges they face and the ecosystems they call home.

Week 8: Movie Magic!

August 18 –  August 22

We’re rolling out the red carpet for our final week—Movie Week! This exciting program invites students to go beyond just watching movies by diving into the art and craft of filmmaking. Throughout the week, students will learn key film vocabulary (such as scene, director, script, cinematography, and special effects) and explore what goes on behind the scenes to bring a movie to life.

Our classes are all-English, all the time.

Native English-speaking teachers

Our classes are all immersive English-learning environments because our teachers are native English speakers. This allows students to improve their language skills more fluidly and colloquially.

Small class sizes

Through group discourse and interaction with their classmates, students are encouraged to speak up and voice their thoughts and opinions. This cultivates their logical thinking and social skills.

Fostering critical thinking skills

Students are encouraged to express their ideas through question-and-answer sessions and think critically about their arguments. This helps them become independent thinkers and prepares students for more advanced levels of writing.
