We use Google Documents to share a general classroom blog with parents (so everyone can see class news and activities) and to inform parents directly about their child’s progress. We choose Google because it’s easy for parents to access from any device and — when shared correctly — it keeps the document private and secure (only people with permission can see it). We also know some parents may not be familiar with Google Docs, so here’s a clear, step-by-step guide for opening the document and leaving a comment on something the teacher wrote.
Access and privacy
- Englist administrators will usually send a link by email or through LINE chat.
- The document owner controls permissions: people can be set as Viewer, Commenter, or Editor. Generally, parents will be set as Commenters.
- Comments are visible to anyone who has access to the document. Don’t put highly private personal details in the classroom blog — instead contact our staff directly for private matters.
Step-by-step: Leave a comment
If using a desktop or laptop
- Open the document in your web browser from the link we sent.
- If needed, sign in with your Google account.
- To comment on a specific sentence or phrase, click and drag to highlight the text you want to comment on.
- After you select text, a small comment icon (a speech bubble / “Add comment”) usually appears on the right side of the document near the selection. Click that icon.
-
- Alternatively: with text selected you can choose Insert → Comment from the top menu or click the comment button in the toolbar.
-
- A comment box will open on the right. Type your message.
-
- If you want to alert the teacher directly, type @ or + and start typing their name or email; select the correct person from the suggestions. That will send them a notification.
-
- Click the Comment button to post your comment. The teacher and other people with access will be able to see it.
- To reply to someone else’s comment: click the comment, type a reply in the thread, then click Reply.
If using a mobile phone
- Open the link on your phone or the Google Docs app. (If you use the app, open Google Docs → tap the document.)
- Tap and hold on a word, then drag the selection handles to highlight the text you want to comment on.
- Tap the comment icon that appears (usually a speech bubble) or tap the three-dot menu and choose Comment.
- Type your comment. Use @ or + and the teacher’s name/email to notify them if needed.
- Tap Send or Comment to post.
If you can’t leave a comment
If you see only View access, contact your child’s case manager directly who will help you resolve the issue.
Tips & etiquette
- Be concise and specific: name the project and/or date if you’re asking about something specific the student did in class or as a take-home assignment.
- Remember comments are visible to anyone with access; for private or sensitive questions, send a private email or message to our administrators.
- Use mentions (@ or +) when you want to make sure the teacher sees your comment — that triggers an email notification.
- If the teacher asks for feedback or action, consider replying directly to the teacher’s comment in the comment thread so there’s a clear record.
